Base64, Base32, Base58 and Base85

Base64 / Base32 / Base58 / Base85 converter

This is a Base64, Base32, Base58 and Base85 encoder and decoder. Pick an alphabet, turn text into copy-paste ASCII, or decode it back. Base64 is RFC 4648. Hello encodes to SGVsbG8=. Base32 uses A-Z and 2-7; Hello encodes to JBSWY3DP. Base58 is the Bitcoin alphabet (no 0, O, I, l). Base85 is Adobe ASCII85 wrapped in <~ ~>.

How to Use

  1. Choose Base64, Base32, Base58 or Base85.
  2. Choose Character Encoding. UTF-8 is the default; GBK, GB2312, Big5, Shift_JIS, EUC-KR, UTF-16 and the rest match the Base64 tool.
  3. Encode turns those bytes into the alphabet. Decode reverses it with the same charset.
  4. Show Example encodes Hello (UTF-8) as Base32 JBSWY3DP.

What the Output Means

These encodings are not encryption. Base32 is common in keys and TOTP secrets. Base58 is used in Bitcoin addresses. ASCII85 is used in PostScript and PDF streams.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why padding on Base32? RFC 4648 pads with = to a multiple of 8 characters. Hello has no pad. A single byte does.
  • Need files or data URIs? Open the dedicated Base64 page. GBK and other charsets are on this page under Character Encoding.
